You would die if you were covered completely in paint, as the skin needs to breathe for you to live. That is why, when Shirley Eaton was painted in gold (Bond), they left a small circle on her back clear.

Actor Buddy Ebsen was supposed to play the Tin Man, he had a really bad allergic reaction to the silver make up and had to be replaced. Buddy Ebsen has passed away, but not from the make up. He lived on to do a lot of TV including these TV series that he starred in Davey Crockett, The Beverly Hillbillies and Barnaby Jones. I watched and enjoyed all of them.

No. The man who played the tin man was not the original. The first actor, Buddy Epson, became ill but did not die of poisoning from the silver paint... neither did actress Shirley Eaton from the Bond movie Goldfinger, from the gold paint.

That was the guy who first played the tin man. He was actor Buddy Ebsen, who later played Uncle Jed on the Beverly Hillbillies. He had an allergic reaction to the make-up.

it was due to an allergic reaction rather than the make up being dangerous.

there's a program on the Discovery channel called Myth Busters, where the presenters take urban legends and try to prove whether or not they are plausible. they covered one of the presenters from head to toe in the same kind of silver paint that they used in the Wizard of Oz, and she was fine.

Accordingto Wikipedia, "Buddy Ebsen was to play the Scarecrow.... But nine days after filming began, he suffered a reaction to the aluminum powder makeup, as it had coated his lungs as he breathed it in while it was applied daily. Consequently, Ebsen (at that point in critical condition) had to be hospitalized and leave the project. MGM did not publicize the reasons for Ebsen's departure and not even his replacement, Jack Haley, initially knew the reason."

No, the originally cast TinMan was allergic to the make up and had to drop out of the project. He did not nearly die.

And the man featured in the movie as the TinMan was NOT allergic to anything and had no nearly fatal incidents.

yes, the original actor to play the tin man was Buddy Epsen ( of Beverly Hillbillies, he got ill from the lead based make-up on his face, they re-cast the role with Jack Haley, and changed the make-up, then they re- wrote the script and made costume changes, and continued filming..
