Blacks in the U.S.A. have to go to prison because they commit crimes and then show up to their court date wearing a FUBU sweatsuit and Timberland boots because they feel that they need to be "gangsta" or some such. Then on said court date they are being represented by an overworked scatterbrained court appointed public defender. After they get released from prison they ask questions in moral outrage without even getting what the social injustice actually is right. Most of our prisons are full and the courts have been lenient about what you can get plea bargained down to a lesser charge and get parole or probation. At that point, you've got to be stupid and violate your parole and THEN your going to jail. Congratulations, FUBU, lack of common sense, and poverty just ruined your life.

Contrary to most of the answers you have received to this question, I agree with you.
Blacks are much more likely to be given stiff prison sentences, as opposed to whites, asians etc..
It has everything to do with the color of their skin and their socio-economic standing.
More blacks are imprisoned for drug related offenses than any other race, yet white people have a much higher drug dependency problem than any other race.
So some impoverished inner city youths have figured out that if they sell drugs to upperclass whites, they can make a pretty decent living. Then the gangs are formed to protect the territory the innercity kids claim for their drug dealing business. Violent crimes arise over territorial disputes, and the vicious cycle repeats. Its all cause and effect.
I know as a white person with brother that has been in and out of prison that he has been given many opportunities by the courts to straighten himself out that most black kids charged with the same crimes would never have been given.
This is a question that gets asked often in sociology courses, yet almost never in mainstream forums.
It is a true problem and it is fueled by race. I don't know if it has anything to do with slavery, but it has everything to do with skin color.

The only blacks that go to prison are those that are convicted of crimes. This is true for whites, asians, hispanics, and all other people.

it's not a race thing...it's a crime thing. If convicted, people go to prison, if found innocent they are set free. Regardless if they are, white, black, hispanic or asian, the color of your skin doesn't matter!!

They don't have to go to prison, they choose to by committing crimes. This has nothing to do with slavery.

I don't think they go because they are innocent of any wrong doing. Gee for heaven's sake read the crime statistics. People don't usually got to prison for their color.
