I need to know what to use, how to make it, and how to make it form. Do I weave it through or something? Do I trim it so it doesn't get overgrown?

Blow up a balloon. Get some string and Elmer's glue. Get the string wet with a little water and Elmer's glue mixture. String the string around the balloon a lot -- enough to look like coarse netting. When the string dries, pop the balloon, and you have your form. And the glue won't hurt your plants. Doesn't hurt us either.

If you are strong handed and can bend wire into a globe, try that. Make sure you have support into the soil! Don't want it rolling off. If you wanted the ivy to root into the globe, you'd line it with sphagnmum moss and put a small clay pot in the center with the bottom hole plugged up. When you water filled the clay pot and the water will diffuse out to the moss and provide a rooting medium for the ivy. Personally, I'm thrilled with just having a support of the ivy to grow onto. You might need to secure the early trailers to the wires.

My first attempt I used wire coat hangers. Wire all the bases together then fan out the coat hangers to a "bird cage." Cut off the hooks if they bother you. It works better as a cage for a potted plant, as a topiary it's pretty big.......better for a much bigger pot.

I've got one too and I just keep wrapping the ends of branches around other parts of the plant to keep it compact. But, you could construct a form for it out of copper wire which they sell in arts and crafts places or in garden centers. Just take one length of it and twist it into any shape you'd like the ivy to grow over...wide or tall, etc. You'll still need to guide it.
