I have a business trip that I'm supposed to go on in June. The problem is, I have a court date set and it is right in the middle of the week that I'm due to be gone. If I don't go on this trip, it could severely impact my career.

So, my question is this: what happens if someone fails to appear? Does he/she end up with a bench warrant? What happens then? If I go on my business trip, turn myself in for failure to appear when I get back, have the money for bail in case they arrest me and go to the next court date (since I think that's what they do), would sort of impact would it have?

Please give any insight you may have on this issue. I really don't want to miss this court date but I'm concerned about my financial welfare if I miss this trip!

The charges are from a couple of checks that bounced at a chinese restaurant last year. Oh, by the way, I already called the district court and the lady said that since it is not a traffic violation that it cannot be changed.

I'm not currently anyone's "employee". I'm a model and am working on a few contracts with someone. These contracts would greatly help me, both financially and with networking for future paying opprotunities.

Ask yourself this question: would being jailed severely impact your career? If the answer is yes, then missing your court appearance is not a good idea.

The least that could happen is that a warrant would be issued. If you are going out of the country they could arrest you as soon as you return. If not, they could turn up right in the middle of your conference or whatever and take you away in handcuffs and you could either be taken straight to court or jailed until the next hearing date. If you've skipped a court appearance already they may refuse you bail, and it certainly won't help you when it comes to sentencing.

My advice is to get a solicitor if you don't already have one, or contact him/her if you do and explain the situation. They may be able to get the court date brought forward or put back for you, or they may be able to argue you out of being given a warrant if you don't appear on the scheduled date. If you can't get a solicitor, contact the court directly and explain (though they will probably just tell you to get a solicitor). If you can get any supporting evidence from your employer this will help you a) argue your case for moving the court date and b) go in your favour come sentencing time.

Well you have a few choices.

1. Reschedule this business trip to another week and go to your court date.

2. Skip the court date and get arrested at a later time, lose your right to fight any of the charges currently brought against you, pay a higher fine, and do a little jail time.

3. Contact the court, explain the situation and see if your date can be changed to some other date.

Think about it. If you don't appear then you could be criminally charge, and I'm sure your current employer or any future employer would look down on a criminal record.

If the court date can't be changed then you may need to miss your trip. Explain to your boss or supervisor the circumstances.

Call the court and ask to reschedule.

Should not be that big a deal unless you comitted a pretty bad crime.

Failure to appear is going to be a bench warrant. No matter what you did or didn't do, failure to appear is going on your record as guilty.
