Always come to as complete stop. When you are still going backwards and shift into forward you are going to have parts spinning the wrong direction and then hitting them with fluid going the opposite way. It is hard on the trans. I hate to see people do it, they are abusing their equipment and are too dumb to realize it. Either that or they don't care. good luck

It is definitely necessary with an automatic transmission. If you are rolling in reverse and switch to drive you will put wear on the gears which, in time, could lead to a blown transmission costing anywhere between three to five thousand to rebuild or replace

Necessary? no...recommended?...absolutely. Taking the rearward momentum of a 4000 lb car and suddenly trying to propel it forward is one of the worst things you can do to a transmission...short of doing that without fluid :) have someone drop a 25 pound weight from 5 ft above you...try to catch it and throw it back up. that sudden jerk on your body and muscles which will hurt you or leave you injured is much like your car is feeling :D

If you don't, you will eventually have a nice bill for replacing either the universal or the constant velocity joints, plus possible transmission damage.

In any transmission it adds that much more pressure to internal components and the higher the RPMs are the harder it will be on your transmission
