The salesman is trying to get as much money out of you as he can. That's the way he earns his living, he would get a bigger commission on the sale.

Take car of yourself, go with the Escape, and personally, I wouldn't get the warranty, 2000 will buy a lot of repairs, and besides, if it doesn't break then you are still money ahead.

That's my opinion, right or wrong, myself, that's what I would do.

I have to agree with "Fordman" and further state that you do not want to buy a Hyundai (or their sister- Kia). The resale value of those Korean cars drops like a rock! Here, in the US of A, those Korean cars come with a 100,000 mile (160,000 km) warranty - not because the cars are good, but because they need the warranty.

I don't think too highly of SUV's nor Ford vehicles. Get a used German or Japanese car (certified pre-owned or with extended warranty - maybe). Why?

I've always owned foreign cars, but my parents have owned both foreign and American. Foreign cars last longer. My current VW & my wife's Nissan have about 160,000 miles (257,000 km) on them. My last VW had about 225,000 miles (362,000 km) on it when I sold it (and it was running quite well).

Most of my friends and relatives own Japanese and/or European cars, including everyone from bank executives to people holding down 2 jobs to try to make ends meet. Everyone buys and keeps their cars for 5 - 10 years, minimum. No one leases, and only the odd person who really cannot afford anything at all buys a cheap Korean car. Doesn't your GF drive a 15-year-old Honda?

Try a diesel VW (used) Jetta or Golf, preferably with a manual transmission. You will go forever on a tank of fuel and the transmission won't break easily. If not, get another Honda or similar car.
