That's pretty much an impossible task to name them all. What you need to look for is small peaceful fish that won;t harm the betta by chasing it too much, nipping it's fins or eating it. Most tetras, smaller types of barbs, cory cats, killifish and rasboras fit this description.

I've heard about cory catfish because it stays low.

But : make sure the fish that u put with ur betta have all enough space and don't look like the betta.
Nor should they have long or fancy fins because the betta would think they are like his own kind and fight them. And if the other fish is also a slow swimmer the betta could do a good damage.
Also make sure u don't by an aggressive species because it will nip the betta's fins off !
Betta's are slow swimmers and a fast aggessive fish would rip their fins off.

I have a betta living alone. He likes playing with the silk deco plants. Most people I asked told me that he would be better on his own. U can put female betta during mating but only for short periods of time :-)

Albino cory catfish. Funny little characters. No colour and look nothing like the betta they make good tank mates. Although they are quite fast moving they are bottom dwellers most of the time, the betta likes the middle and top so they wont interact too much. As with any addtion, quaranteen it and watch carefully. some bettas just don't like company others are quite happy to share the tank. To some fish that long flowy tail is a target. Nipped fins can get infected.

Any fish with long fancy fins that are colorfull a beta MAY Nip at the fins. Guppies and angels are examples of these. However not all guppies have the nice looking flowing fins. really you should be concerned with long finned species. My bettas sometimes didnt like the angels or guppies in there area other bettas didnt have any problem whatsoever. If you dont want to take the chance on loosing a fish. Dont try a gupie or angels. Anything else would be satisfactory for your betta.

Actually, because bettas are rather slow-swimming fish, fast-swimming fish don't go along too well. Or, rather, really active fish, because they will disturb the betta.
Definately don't get fish with bright colors and flashy tails. Even if they swim fast, the betta will harass them, as bettas can 'sprint' or swim in real fast bursts, and they can definately be aggressive.

I've got some glass catfish in my tank, which the betta has never bothered. I also don't think my betta ever harrassed my platys; they were colorful, yes, and he threatened them a few times, but they've got small tails, and my betta eventually just left them alone for the most part.

Oscars LOVE bettas. Despite what others say, bettas love to be with other bettas. These fish were bred for showing, not fighting. The fins are too long. The bettas that are used for fighting in Thailand have much shorter fins. I won 6,000 (about $190) Bhat my last trip to Bangkok. These fights are fun and part of their social system. 6,000 Bhat buys MANY drinks in Thailand. You will make MANY new friends! I go to Bangkok at least once a year. They sell bettas in whiskey bottles for about 5 Bhat (16¢) all over the streets. You can't take 'em home, so you might as well fight 'em!

Thanks for the 2 points!

I keep them with cory catfish and cardinal tetra's and the betta keeps completely to itself. They can pretty much go with any smaller peaceful type fish that isn't known for nipping and does not look like the betta, but considering there are hundreds of compatible species I'm not about to name them all. Better to choose some you like and then come back and ask if they are compatible. Remember that bettas like lots of plants, as do most of the compatible fish that go with them.

Lorena, among other people here, have been misinformed about bettas, or perhaps misunderstood how their aggression works - which is toward their own kind or similar looking fish.

It's much easier to say what can't.

Guppies and Angelfish. The Betta might attack the guppies and the Betta will attack the Angelfish.

Any kind of fast swimming fish. go to fish store and look for fast swimming fish. but put them in a big tank. dont put beta and the other fish in a small pot. because it is easy for the beta to catch the other fish.
