the first steps on independence have all ready been taking. Devolution is only the process no the end result.
Scotland would fair better under independence. We would not lose out - in fact the Scottish Oil revenues stands at about £8 - 9 billion, about the same as the extra money we get from the Barnett Formula.
Many in Scotland are fed up that we do not have control over immigration. Scotland is a different Country, with different needs of that of England.
Our army regiments are sent to areas in the world that may be causing more harm than good. Many MSPs, including some in the Labour Party in Holyrood wanted nothing to do with Iraq.
And now Westminster wants to replace, and upgrade Trident. at a huge cost. This money will surely be spent on other public areas that is desperate for the money.
Many in Scotland may not want total independence yet, however Many do. Those who do not want independence still want at least more control over Scottish matters.
I myself want Scottish independence as the Union now is almost unworkable. Times have moved on, and we want more powers to govern ourselves. It is only human nature to at least try and get in control of yourself, and your country.
Scotland would do better as a small independent country within the E.U many other countries have done it very successfully and will continue to do it very successfully.

To all those above who seem to think that Scotland lost a war and was conquered by England - read your history books.
The Scottish King - James VI succeeded to the English throne in 1603 and became James I of England. He was then the King of both nations. This so called "Union of the Crowns" was the first step in the peaceful union between Scotland and England.
In 1707 the members of the Scottish Parliament voted for a Union of the governments of England and Scotland, an idea that had been proposed by many since the Union of the Crowns and had been attempted three times previously. Many contend that the Scottish members of parliament were bribed by representatives of Queen Anne (herself of Scottish descent) to vote in favour of the union. The union was very unpopular in Scotland at the time, but it brought a much needed boost to Scotland's prosperity, which had suffered badly after the disastrous attempt to set up a Scottish colony in Central America.
The Union has now lasted 300 years. Many think that has been long enough and that Scotland would be better off as a small independent nation within the European Union, and they are probably correct about that in my view. The majority of Scots, however do not want to break away and remain in favour of the Union.
Do not mistake a lead of a few percentage points in opinion polls for the SNP over other parties, for some great will for independence among the Scottish people. That is simply not the case.

The Scots are fed up of their country being run from Westminster and if I were in their shoes I would be too. They are fundamentally socialist and so a clean break with England would be better for everyone. Especially when the next party to be in UK Government - the Conservatives will have about zero Scottish MPs. I still don't understand why the C's want to keep the Union, I guess it's principles over everything. If they were an England only party they would win all the national elections and New Labour spin & lies would be consigned to the dustbin forever.

a few thoughts.
to be pro Scottish is not the same as being anti-English.
every nation aspires to be self governing. there is nothing wrong with that. if its good enough for Iraq and Afghanistan, then why not Scotland?
Scottish people, and strangely, non Scots living in Scotland have a different view of the world.
if Scotland became independant ,and its still a big if,we would have the opportunity to shape our nation to how we want it. could we make more of a hash than Westminster has done.? on recent form, i doubt it.
sometimes an idea or aspiration has its time.maybe nows the time to give it a whirl

Mainly cause we'd like control over our own natural resources and freedom to decide our own legislation. That doesn't mean the mickey mouse parliament we have just now. Also, you couldn't bear to be parted? In that case, how come you never write, you never call and when was the last time you visited ?. The "union" was a travesty put upon the people of the time by minority interests. Much like Iraq is a travesty put on us today by a minority government. Its not that we don't like you, England is fantastic but its not my home or my country, Why should I be governed from afar?

they lost a war with England and their Queen was beheaded then came Bonnie prince Charley who tried to start a rebellion which failed. The Scots have everything they need to be independent except they will never be free of England. About 3 years ago Scotland was given home rule to elect a government and be more autonomous but not free.

England is about ten times bigger than Scotland so we don't really have much of a say in how Britain's run anyway as we'd always be outvoted, like during the conservative years why did we have a conservative government when they where always a minority north of the border.
Besides we would have control of our own taxes and as the SNP seems to be interested in cutting them why not vote for Independence, also it gives us an excuse to get away from the monarchy.

They think that the oil revenues from North sea oil is more than the subsidies given by the English government to Scotland - they are so wrong!
They also think that Sean Connery is going to leave his Bahamas villa and come home to be President of the new Free Scotland, bringing with him Billy Connolly (Minister of Jokes) and Rod Stewart (Minister of Football).
The only time these old guys come back to Scotland is to promote a film, concert tour or new album.
Anyway, I for one would welcome a Free Scotland! Perhaps we could hire all those Polish guys to come and re-build Hadrian's wall. We could charge the Scots to come through into England.
But ask yourself who is going to pay for the pensions, the education, the road, the trains, the postal service, the police, the refuse collectors, the hospitals, etc., etc. As I understand it there are more sheep in Scotland than people. Maybe they could tax sheep?

I believe the scots should be allowed a vote on the Union. Thats what should happen in any fair democracy. I think everyone would be a winner. The Scots would have their national identity they crave, and the English taxpayer would stop having to fund 11.3 billion per year to subsidise the scots.

Probably for some of the same reasons that we here in the US don't appreciate the English & their ridiculous ways of ruling & thought (or lack of)! Many of us have Irish ancestry & we came to America to escape from all of Englands crappiness. It's about time the Scottish pulled away from their biggest enemy...! The next thing they should do is keep Wal-mart from building on their land & taking away the mom & pop shops that keep pride in a community!
