Wow, for once a governmental decision I agree with! Hey, maybe those Indians aren't so bad, after all.

Sorry, I assumed that anyone reading this would be smart enough to know what I was referring to...well, that's what I get for assuming!

It IS a crime (over there). I figured the sniveling celebrity lovers in this crowd would come to his defense. Do you think the Indian courts would let YOU off, if you did the same thing?
You know, I was just thinking...since the demos here in AmeriKa love to make new laws, why not one similar to this? H-m-m...just a thought...
BTW, did you know that in the 1940's it was (still) illegal for a woman to wear pants in public? My oh my, how we have gone downhill since those days!
[A sheriff in Marion, Ohio arrested a woman on that charge back then, so don't accuse me of making it up!]

Yes. He's giving Americans a bad name (well, a worse one). He should have known better. Anytime you travel to another country you are responsible for knowing the customs and laws. His actions have also caused the woman he kissed to receive death threats.

I think he wrongly violated cultural values and beliefs, and yes he should be punished for that. He has further worsened our reputation of being selfish and egotistical. But lets face it, he'll end up paying a fine and the whole thing will be forgotten about.
After seeing all of the other answers, I decided to come back and add something to mine. This seems to just be one more excuse for ignorant Americans to hate anything different than our own cultural beliefs. We should respect world differences, not judge. If Gere was unaware of the laws and regulations, let this be a reminder for him that we are not the same. But we shouldn't increase our stereotypes and be quick to judge. That is, for one, the reason WE are hated all around the world.

Are you just mad because you wanted a kiss from Richard Gere? If you think the Indians aren't so bad ....( Which they are not bad at all ) I am sure that they would let you live in India.

He broke a law in their country and should be punished. I hope that they are lenient on him as he is a foreigner and may not have realized he was breaking the law. If it was a willful act then he showed contempt for the Indian people in their country and should be prosecuted.

for what? India has more urgent problems like cleaning the disgustingly polluted Ganges River and instituting a sanitation program. No offense intended, but apparently it is a very dirty country and no one seems to be doing much about it.

lol....and in the article it said,
"Photographs of the clinch were then splashed across front pages in India where public displays of affection are largely taboo."
i don't understand why they would cause all that drama about public displays of affection and then go ahead and splash the picture all over the front pages of newspapers and magazines for the public to see?

No! He shouldn't be arrested. Maybe what he did was in poor taste, but it definitely wasn't a crime. If poor taste was a crime then most of us would be in jail!!
