Your acceptance of the big bang theory is 50% job done. The Cosmos started with a big bang is a confirmed fact. But what caused the big bang would be cleared now. A new cosmos is created whenever the big bang occurs. Let us travel to time slightly before the occurrence of the big bang. What is the shape of the Cosmos then!
This is the time of dissolution of the old cosmos. The dissolution of a Cosmos occurs when the ever expanding Cosmos is unable to cross the escape velocity. Unable to gear out of the gravitational pull... the Cosmos starts shrinking. This leads to a complete collapse of the Cosmos. The moment complete dissolution of the old cosmos occurs... it reduces to size of half a thumb.
Just imagine... the whole Cosmos... the entire Cosmos reducing to size of half a thumb (this has been aptly clarified in Bhagavad Gita... the doctrine by Lord Krishna in Mahabharata). And what is this volume... the size of half a thumb. This cluster of pure energy is the volume occupied by all purified souls atmans in the entire Cosmos which at the time of dissolution of the Cosmos reached the last leg of cosmic life... the 8.4 millionth manifestation.
Having liberated forever from the cycle of birth and death... this cluster of purified souls atmans collect together to form the size of half a thumb! This is the simple definition of God Almighty... this cluster of pure energy... the size of half a thumb is what we know as God Almighty.
This cluster of pure energy unable to contain itself for long in the same position... explodes with a big bang sending all souls atmans hurtling at any imaginable speeds throughout the Cosmos. And starts a new cosmos... a new journey! To come back to their original pure pristine form... these souls that have gathered impurities on their cosmic journey now require manifesting a series of 8.4 million life forms. It is only then they shall liberate themselves permanently from the cycle of birth and death.
The Cosmos... the big bang theory... God Almighty... the cluster of all souls atmans in the Cosmos are integrally related... none can survive without the other! More on Big Bang - http://www.godrealized.org/big_bang_theory.html

1.) In order to have a big bang, we need some kind of matter or energy to cause it. That is pure conjecture. The Big Bang might simply be the expansion of a neighboring dimension into our own. Or it could be that what we perceive as an expansion is actually the pull of negative space. Or the universe may exist due to the Anthropic Principle. There are many possibilities you are ignoring. 2.) Where and how did this original matter/energy originate? It doesn't matter. Theories describe observable phenomenon. They may posit the origin of such phenomenon, but that is not a requirement for a theory to be valid. Atomic theory explains the structure and interaction of atoms. It does not need to know where the matter came from to be a valid theory. The Big Bang theory explains the current state of the universe and the most likely reason for how it got this way. It is not concerned with what precluded it, or even what caused it. 3.) To dismiss or ignore question #2, means you have a story with no foundation. That's because you are looking for a story. Theories are not "stories." Study the THEORY, and find fault with *it*, not hypothetical "what ifs."

Most answers will involve string theory and higher dimensions (ie. colliding branes in a 10 dimensional space). There are also theories that the universe has always existed and the big bang is not a singularity but merely an incredible hot and dense state that was preceded by a cooler and rarer time. Right now no one know and as stated before, physics can only start describing things a fraction of a second after the big bang.

To paraphrase Terry Pratchett, the cutting edge of scientific thinking today is "In the beginning there was nothing, not even time... and then it exploded". He correctly points out that, far from claiming to know everything, scientists these days actually brag about how much they DON'T know.
That's what always amazes me about so-called Creationists, who imagine their God to be almighty, all knowing and eternal, yet don't credit him with the intelligence to know the basic cause and effects behind Big Bang. For a Being for whom a thousand years is but a day, IMHO Big Bang make an even better case for Divine Intervention than Genesis.

One theory is the big bounce. The the universe existed and that the Universe collapses in on it's self. Compresses, explodes, and things happen again.

Nobody knows. I doubt we will ever know. The furthest we can see back to the big bang is a trillionth of a trillionth of a billionth of a second after the big bang happened. We have no idea why it happened.

According to one theory, due to the amount of mass in the universe, the universe will one day collapse in on itself... then another big bang will happen... then the universe will expand... and then collapse in on itself... AD INFINITUM...As in: there is no beginning and no end.... only a never ending cycle thanks to gravity.

when black holes grow old, they explode.
black holes are a lot of matter (stuff) crammed into a small space.
the particle that exploded to form the big bang was all the matter (stuff) in the universe crammed into a space the size of an atom.
it grew too old, and exploded...
... is my theory.

Matter compressed until it exploded is the quick answer, but watch out because all the complicated answers are going to follow
