I was in a group of other Star Wars fans during the original release in 1977. We had no idea. Our biggest thing was Are They Really Gonna Make A Part 2? lol See, at this time sequels were out of the ordinary. Not many movies at all had a sequel then. So with rumours of a Part 2 to Star Wars, we were lit for years until the release of 'Empire Strikes Back'. The thoughts that Vader may be Luke's father never even crossed our minds. This was a time when the Star Wars 'history' as we know it today, was non-existent at the time because we only had the one movie to go by. So when 'Empire' comes out and Vader utters the immortal line "Luke. I am your father." You can imagine our mouths dropped open, the hairs on our arms stood up, the girls shreiked and the guys jumped up in the theatre screaming 'YEAH!'... Now, that was something I'll never forget! :-)

i don't really understand this question..but let me try to answer it..hahahha:
in A New Hope, only yoda, obi-wan, and vader know that luke is vader's son ... however, obi-wan tells luke that vader murdered anakin
in Empire Strikes Back, vader tells luke himself that he is his father...(when they were filming this:
During production, great secrecy surrounded the fact that Darth Vader was Luke's father. Like the rest of the crew, David Prowse, who spoke all of Vader's lines during filming, was given a false page that contained dialogue which the revelatory line being "Obi-Wan killed your father."[9][10] Until the film premiered, only George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Mark Hamill and James Earl Jones knew what would really be said. Jones later reported that his initial reaction to the line was, "Oh, he's lying!"[2] The film includes a brief image of Vader with his mask off, facing away from the camera. For the original viewers of the film, this scene made it clear that Vader is not a robot, but instead organic — and possibly human. This fact becomes significant later, when Vader reveals himself to be Luke's father, which may have been confusing without the earlier scene.[7]

hope that helped

Not me. I saw it when it first came out in 1977. Darth being Luke's father was a curve ball in " The Empire Strikes Back." I seem to recall it did not make much sense and was inconsistent with the first film.

I didn't, but I was watching the local news, and they were interviewing people about the movie. They asked one kid what his favorite part was, and he said, "The part where Luke finds out that Darth Vader is his father."
The reporter said, "Oops! I don't think you were supposed to say that!" But it wasn't live; they could have edited that out.

I never thought that. I though since he killed Luke's father, he was going to try and kill Luke too. I figured we would find out WHY in the third one.

I saw Star Wars when it first came out in 1977 and will always be proud to say I walk out of that film. That the Dr. Doom knockoff was anybody's father couldn't interest me in the least.
