I've had 2 hamsters, 6 mice and four rats. I really do think mice and rats are a lot smellier than hamsters - something to do with the fact that mice and rats pee a LOT more - they basically coat their cages with urine slime!
Hamsters I find are fine with being cleaned out once a week, and the actually hamsters themselves always smell delicious to me when you give them kisses! Mice on the other hand I find need cleaning out twice a week, and tho I do give my mice kisses, their little bodies reek! A very distinctive smell!
I wouldn't listen to the people who say 'as long as you clean mice cages out often enough there's no reason for them to smell". Very nice in theory - but you'd have to disinfect everything in a mouse's cage every day to stop it smelling completely - and this is just going to be too stressful for the animal.

Mice tend to be smellier....Hamsters can produce quite a bit of odor too...
If you're wanting to get a small animal and are basing it on smell, why don't you consider a rat...
They actually smell alot less than mice and hamster....if you keep their cages clean then they really don't smell..
They also make wonderful pets, they are smart and social...
Just something to think about....Here's some sites with a lot of info if you're willing to take a look...

Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!!

Mice are smellier by a landslide. I refuse to own another mouse, because no matter how often you clean the cages, they tend to stink it up within minutes.
Hamsters are better, and I do not remember ever complaining about the smell, when I owned one.
I prefer rats though. :)

It depends on whether the mouse is a male or female. Male mice tend to be much smellier than female mice. They mark their territory. Also, do not get more than one male mouse (or hampster for that matter) because they will fight and kill each other. I have owned both hampsters and mice as pets, and I have found mice more entertaining, but that decision is up to you! Good luck!

Mice win, hands down. I've had both and 1 mouse smelled worse then 3 hamsters even with daily cage cleaning.

Mice. Hamsters don't nearly smell as bad as Mice. Mice you can never, ever get them to smell nice unless you get them a bathtub to live in. I don't think they even wash themselves that often.

They don't smell, its the cage that smells if it's not taken care of properly then the animal starts to smell. So if you take the time to properly care for the animal and it's housing they shouldnt smell.
