I am not sure. I do know from a teacher's point of view it's a pain hearing all the complaining. And I don't agree so much with homework myself. If a student is not interested in learning something than any amount of homework isn't going to make it anymore interesting. I still give homework and count it for very little in the grading process. It's all about how one performs and if there is little work put in, there will be a low performance. School is a place to learn what is like to put the effort in to get results.

Besides, who do you think, does the homework? Yea, the A students who learn the material for the test. A basketball player's stats are what he/she does in a game, not practice. However, if he/she doesn't practice, it sure will show. After all, the rest of your life you will be judged on how well you do something. High school is a good way to let kids decide ramifications of their choices.

Yeah, I feel a little strongly about this.

When I was at school homework was simply anything you had not been able to finish off during lesson time. Extra work was set only for the kids who found the days lessons really hard and could use a little extra help. I seem to have been able to get by very well without doing much homework. Unfortunately a lot of kids today don't seem to be so lucky, schools seem to think the school day should extend into their pupils private lives!

Judging by the state of the spelling and grammar of a lot of people on YA, I think they could do with a bit of homework - lol!!

Because, to grasp a concept you usually have to do it many, many times. If you didn't have homework, you'd undoubtedly have to go to school over the summer if you wasted all that time doing the work in school.

And for all of the people who sit around and say "I don't need to do homework, I know this, I'm really smart!"... Well, if you understand it completely, then it shouldn't take a long time eh?

Trust me; without homework, all of your mark would be based on a couple of tests. Imagine if you FAILED one of them! You'd pretty much FAIL the course.

Homework is just a method of making sure you understand it, can do it and budget time.

Seriously... In the real world, your work follows you home. You have papers to look over, a dozen e-mails bugging you, stuff to sign etc. etc.....

Homework is just extra practice... Although it can sometimes be a little tough, it comes out OK.

Think about it you spend approx 6 hours in school a day.. your kids so you shouldn't be having a ''private life'' so to speak, yea spend it with your mates but really that's about it.

The main purpose of homework is to show that you have understood what you have learnt throughout the day and to build on your knowledge, we've all been there it may not be pleasant but it's for your own good.

Plus it saves you hanging on street corners getting up to no good. Welcome to the real world kiddo, we all have to do things we don't like and trust me when you get a full time job, you'll wish you was back at school, I know I do!

I think people should have a choice to do homework as it interfierce with your private/personal life, surely this is against your human rights? Also, if the school is functioning properly surely all work would be done at school as that's what you go there for.

Because it will help you with your grammar and spelling!!!!!!!!
Anyway, it shows the teacher how much you have retained and how well you understood the subject.
Just because a few others don't like it does NOT mean you need to do the same!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those who don't like it are just lazy and think they already know everything - NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They (and you) just do NOT realize by NOT doing homework - you will only be able to get a job paying minimum wage and no money to do anything with.
Do your homework, go onto college and get a great paying job!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this moment, your life is as easy as it is ever going to get. You get homework so that you continue to learn outside of school. It is good for you.

Subquestion: Doesn't it seem like every 10th question on this site is a kid complaining about having to learn something?

an article i saw recently said that ( in primary at least) , homework does not increase learning, or reinforce what has been learned in school. Also, I feel sorry for those that work full time and the short time they have with their kids, is spent argueing with them to do homework

Trust me there is no good reason.
I tell my teachers not to give any and the parents all come and complain that their children aren't being given any homework!
Nice people ....
The odd project to stretch your research muscles is fine. Otherwise if you cannot absorb it in school there is something wrong with your school curriculum.
