Remember Willingham went 10-1 his first year...after an (8-0 start)

Weis started 5-2 in his first, and has been repeatedly STEAMROLLED by top 10 teams the past 53 weeks...the problem Alumni, and Boosters said was the reason Willingham was let go.

Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20.

Michigan 47, Notre Dame 21.

USC 44, Notre Dame 24.

LSU 41, Notre Dame 14.

Contract extension for Weis.

Double standard, eh?

Notre Dame played Army, Navy, North Carolina (who won ONE game and came LAST in the ACC), and nearly lost to a middle of the pack UCLA team...AT HOME.

In addition, these teams (ie - North Carolina) gained over 400 yards of Offense vs. ND. Hmm....

What meaningful victories have been had??

UCLA?? (Fluke TD play vs a mediocre team/Defense...name ONE player off of that defense)

Air Force Academy?!?!
Army?!!?
Navy?!?!
North Carolina?!?!

These are games from LAST years' schedule. No team defeated by ND finished in the top 25.

None. Is the ND record from last year deceiving?

Folks Ty's schedule wasn't THIS bad.

There aren't ANY meaningful victories besides GA Tech, and they should have lost THAT game (Reggie Ball is as erratic of a QB you will find, Cal Johnson made him look decent).

I am not a Ty Willingham guy, but ND plays the most awful programs for an apparent padding and deciving 9 or 10 win season...

....Then reality comes out when bowl season comes around.....

No1 willingham inheirited the former coaches players, as did Weis. Under willingham, Quinn couldn't do much. Weis has the pro credentials and the work ethic and drive to produce a winning team. As far as I can tell Weis has a decent job of working with what he has, as had Willingham. It won't be an immediate return to glory for all Irish fans, takes time. Weis has the 1 QB in the nation so far, just need to recruit the supporting players to help the program. Willingham could do it but could not use the players much to their potential. Take Quinn as an example. He blossomed under Weis.

there are a couple reasons i think:

1. weis is a notre dame alum...people knew, loved, and respected him before he even stepped through the doors at notre dame...willingham would never have even been the head coach if it weren't for the george o'leary scandal

2. weis was a proven winner...he had won super bowls as the offensive coordinator in new england and people loved the thought that he was a championship coach, while on the other hand ty was a consistent winner at stanford, but never made any big noise in the pac-10

3. weis has given them two good years in a row...this is something willingham never did and bob davie never did, charlie had all the alumni and boosters talking national title for two straight years, while ty had a great first year but then a significant fall-off which eventually led to his dismissal

one can argue that some of it has to do with ty being the first and only black coach in notre dame history, and having the pressure that goes along with that, but i didn't list that because honestly i'm not really sure...i would like to believe that one of the most devout catholic universities in america would not be racist in its choice of athletic coaches, but there's obviously that possibility

honestly, wies' team is just more competative. while it is true he has lost some big games, they were BIG games. willingham lost a bunch of games to bad teams. even his 5-0 start a few years ago consisted of more than a few completely lucky finishes like vontez duff's last minute int return.

assuming you will even accept an answer other than "wies gets more respect because he's a white man", the simple fact is that willingham's system just wasn't right for notre dame. it looked like a bunch of square pegs being stuck in round holes.

while i do thing willingham is a really good coach in general, he just wasn't as good a fit @ ND as weis is.

Thats a great point. Part of it is the hype that surrounds Weiss when he came to Notre Dame. And another part and I'm sorry to say this but Ty Willingham is black so he might have been under a little more pressure to succed.

Charlie Weis's respect mostly comes from the fact that he was one of the best offensive minds in the NFL, not in college. He still has to prove it. He's also a great quarterback tutor, look what he did with Tom Brady and totally changed Brady Quinn....

Ty Willingham was never able to develop Quinn..

What Weis did while with the Patriots is the reason for the respect. But a good NFL assistant does not always make for a good college head coach. Brady Quinn the next Tom Brady.? Not even close.

Yea there is a double standard Ty dosent have the Super Bowl rings thats Charlie Weiss has and that is a big deal. Yea ND always seems to lose the big ones no matter who the coach is hopefully it will change at some point.

The big issue you seem to ignore with Willingham is that ND was going backwards every year after his first year there. They were well down the rankings by the time he was canned...

I don't know but I'm guessing maybe cuz Weis went to the NFL If the other coach also went and coached in the NFL and won a ring then I really don't know

to be honest its all hype. The talent on that team is no different. With ty there they were wolid on both sides of the ball now the offense is great but i cant name a single starter on ther d. Its because of the pro background
