from LA to Detroit must be similar as LA to NY, from LA should be alot of fun, alot of scenery, desert, put through the mid west, and into Chicago, after Chicago, you are on your own, but if the Detroit train is anything like the NY train, bring your gas mask, the train is a toilet, very little exaggerating here, sorry to say, but the trip from LA is worth it, there might be a layover in Chicago, but you can walk around on the train, and if you have the bread, money, you can get a sleeper, privacy, nice, but coach is not bad, considering, you can bring on snacks, the meals in the diner are okay, bring money, if you smoke, you have to wait til they stop some place, and those are infrequent, bring a camra, bring head phones if you want, it can be noisy, near people with childeren, or and get near people who like to talk, bring ear plugs, anyway, it can get a bit tedious, but if you do not like to fly, it is the thing, and it far outranks the bus, so good luck and have a great trip, i have ridden this train many times, coming from the west is the better part of the trip, the train is nicer in general,,,, okay take it easy, or i should say all aboard these trains on the average run at least 8 yes, at least 8 hrs late, sometimes as much as 15 so be prepared for anything , and be prepared for long stops in the middle of nowhere, just waiting for another train to pass

I did the same thing 4 years ago with 3 kids. Went coach, and brought a light blanket, cooler full of food (and beer!) cereal and milk. It did save on money, cause the 'kitchen' car with microwave food was awful, and the supper car with good food was very expensive. The worst part was no shower, so wear comfortable clothes (nothing tight). At that time, there was a smoking car. Also, at that time you could buy a 'mug' and use it for refillable coffee for free. That was well worth the price, so ask if they still do that. We had a blast! The car with the windows was a great place to hang out and read during the day, and at night it turned into the 'party' car. Would do it again. The sleepers were more expensive than flying, so it wouldn't have been worth it to us. Have fun, 'All aboard!'

I traveled Amtrak on a 1500 mile journey, switching trains in Chicago. I chosen a sound asleep automobile going and not in any respect a sound asleep automobile returning in basic terms to have the feel of practice go back and forth and to judge the reports. The sound asleep automobile grow to be an outstanding journey and the practice wasn't very finished, so it gave an chance to satisfy some exciting human beings. i attempted the eating automobile once and it truly is an journey that you're going to endure in options in a delightful way. I shared a table with strangers because that i grow to be vacationing on my own and there grow to be a lengthy watch for any accessible table otherwise. The go back holiday grow to be yet another count number number; The A/C went out, so it grow to be a very uncomfortable journey at the same time as attempting to sleep in a constrained ecosystem as a seat. the perfect i might want to do grow to be relax my eyes - not in any respect fell asleep. human beings were disillusioned, so grow to be no longer conducive to any "we are having an outstanding holiday" chit chat. Felt really surreal being on a convention instead of a airplane with the dimmed lights. Sharing centers stumbled on those situations in basic terms going from undesirable to worse. certain, is sensible to have layering of garments as someone reported because you do not administration situations. Your Iowa to Colorado October jaunt can provide a relax contained in the air with in a single day situations and not in any respect the perfect insulation and doorways starting up to the exterior air. i might want to also recommend taking alongside your own snacks. Your journey is short adequate, yet will in all likelihood sense lengthy adequate by sitting this length of time for the most area. upward push up and walk round. This holiday provides you with an journey that you're going to continuously endure in options. Trains have you ever see the global bypass by in a particular variety of way. you may have some 30 minute layover stops at stations the position you'll get off the practice and stretch your legs contained in the evening air relax. I strongly recommend doing that and taking area in the sparkling air, sights and sounds. take excitement in and ideal needs on your staggering journey!

We didnt go that far, but when we were in our early 20's , no kids, really liked it, since you can bring on a cooler of food, beer, etc, and the seats were really really big, seemed bigger than first class air. Plus the extra rooms they have for mingling too.

Theres also some new busline - aimed at a younger generation, but forget the name.

oh Lord, why on earth would you leave California to come to Detroit??? This place is a festering shithole. No jobs to be had, crime is rampant, people are nervous, frustrated, and ready to snap. Why on earth would you want to come here??

to answer your question though, the trainride will probably be the highlite of your trip, unless you enjoy being mugged.

do not go coach, pay for the sleeper

you will be fed, have wine tasting, access to movie theater, have an area to retreat to

and it is expensive

People do it over and over again and love it. Good luck
