I think we are at war but I ask this to try and understand why some don't think we are.
What should we have done after 9/11?

We are at war. The terrorists are the greatest current threat to our security. We did exactly what needed to be done after 9/11, we took the fight to the enemy.

The enemy would be the Islamist terrorists. Sorry, I thought I was clear enough.

legally, war has not been declared. However, I don't know what else you would call this absolute muck up.

If we behaved as if there were other ideologies in this world that were as legitimate as ours for the people practicing them, then terrorists might not be a threat to us. Yet we continue to stick our noses in where they are not wanted using claims that we are "spreading democracy."

After 9-11, there should have been an investigation that was transparent to the public about the incident. There never was a true investigation and many all too important questions are still unanswered.

after 9-11 we should have worked toward arresting those terrorist involved and bringing justice to America.

We should have worked with all of the nations on this planet to attack and destroy terrorist where they live and train. It should have been a true "Global War on Terrorism"....

What we should have not done is attacked and invaded Iraq. All it has done is created dead Americans, huge debts, and ill will across the globe.

"we took the fight to the enemy"

Idiot. Define "enemy" please. Did we take the fight to Osama, cause I'm sure not seeing him anywhere? We did however invade a sovereign nation which had nothing to do with the 9/11 attack. Where is your logic here?
