My suggestion is to stay away from the really big hot button issues like abortion, the war, capital punishment, etc. Teachers read a million of these every year and they are sick of them. Chances are they have had a really good student or two write essays on those topics so yours may not look stellar in comparison. i would write about something they haven't read about so much, like:

1. Should we support World Bank policies
2. Should home birth be legal or regulated
3. Genetically engineered (GMO foods)

Or whatever other off the wall topic you like. Just stay away from gun control and evolution, really.
3.

I think that the top controversy is THE WAR IN IRAQ followed by ABORTION and GAY MARRIAGE. At least in my oppinoin they are. There is so much said on these topics but little done. I think these would really help out your project. I have added a few websites to help you with the information on abortion and gay marriage. You can look up the war in Iraq in any newscast or just type WAR on Iraq on yahoo search. Good Luck with your project :)

Without knowing what class this is for, off the top of my head I'm thinking:
-Gay marriage/civil unions
-Capital punishment
-Abortion
-Use of torture tactics in military prisons
-Censorship in the media
-No Child Left Behind
-Special Education
-Criminal prosecution of children as adults
-The rights of convicted felons to profit from selling the story of their crime(s)
There are many, many others, but these are just a few. Good luck!

It's not good because it's wrong. Abortion is murder and killing a child should never be a choice or a right. Life begins at conception and science backs that up.
