I have an older (probably 10 years old) Toshiba that has had this problem on and off. It starts and is SUPER dark, you can see it but you have to squint and have REALY good lighting. I havn't used this laptop for probably a year, but do not want to get it repaired or get a new one. is there anything else i can do? and i have tried brightining the screen.

Ok so im pretty sure its the backlight. How much would it cost to repair it and could i do it? where can i buy a new backlight and does it have to be a specific type? I checked ebay and couldn't find any, so any help would be nice. thanks.

Look for either keys on the keyboard (e.g. a function key) or a control panel in windows to increase screen brightness.

Also, if you've been using it on battery, try keeping it plugged in. My computer automatically dims its screen if its running on battery only.

It' sounds like the backlight. On a some older Toshiba's you could replace the backlight, but you had to dissemble the LCD to do it! The problem in doing that is there can be no flying dust what so ever, like when sunlight enters a room and you can see dust not usually visible. Because if any dust gets in there you will see it. I replaced the back light on Toshiba once, never again took a couple of hours to get it right. Also it could be the FL inverter is bad. It steps up the voltage to power the backlight. The backlight is a tiny florescent lamp like the ones in ceilings only smaller. You can get replacement LCD's

Ex Toshiba tech.

It sounds like the backlight might be going out.

They sell replacement backlights on e-bay for relatively low cost. You'll need to do a little soldering, but it can be fixed.

sounds like the backlight is gone or going or the cable is worn.

repair means replacing the screen so it isn't worth it, time for a new laptop I'm afraid.

Does the brightness control do anything?

It sounds like your LCD's backlight, or the circuit that powers it has broken.

That would be a repair job. Sorry.

try holding down the function key and tapping on the up arrow key. It brightens up my laptop screen.
