I don't think that it is possible to assault somebody with beans as an assault is the threat of violence but maybe throwing them is a threat as real as the voiced action.
I would think it is more likely to be an attempted battery charge as the betray is the carrying out of the threat, even though the victim was not hit, the attempt was made. Yes, you can spit on somebody or even hit them with a flower, if they do not want to be touched a person has no right to touch them.
That's the way the bean bounces.

You gotta hand it to Hugh....he has the most embarrasing rap-sheet in history. First he gets himself arrested for 'fraternising' with whores and now he's got himself knicked for chucking beans. Truly the Bad Boy of British Cinema.....
I am very suprised to hear that 'Bean-throwing' is illegal. I wonder if this applies to all food produce, as I threw some bread to a duck today. I hope this would not be viewed as an 'attempted assault' or some form of animal cruelty.

Maybe if Hugh had farted it would have been termed a deadly weapon!!!! *LOL*
And yes it is possible to assault a person with beans! I assault my hubby most after eating beans via gas from my bottom!
Another way of assaulting is having baked bean rage (lobbing tins of beans at everyone!)

I'm surprised that's all he did at that jerk...
too bad it wasn't a well-placed punch in the face.
Hugh Grant and most celebrities are under attack themselves, by the press and photo hounds.
Look, we have to put ourselves in the place of a celebrity to understand what it must be like. As soon as you open your door to go outside you're surrounded by this "feeding frenzy" of sharks, known as the Paparazzi.
Celebrities like Hugh Grant have ABSOLUTELY no privacy...even in their own bathrooms and bedrooms they are not sure if they're being recorded or photographed with a camera using a 1000mm lens and Night Vision to boot.
Yes, I know..."as a celebrity you are a public figure and it's normal to draw attention everywhere you go" but, there is NO limit to this, no boundary where the celebrity can be by him/herself...it's just too much and I don't blame any of them when they lose control and fight back.

1 why was he carrying a lunch box with cold baked beans in?
2 What has any of it to do with the price of butter
3 Could he have just stuck the odd bean up his nose and propelled it with a nose blow, hopefully surreptitiously shooting bean bombs at the press stalkers?
4 Could scabbetti have a similar effect?

Before anyone else thinks it. This answer isn't clever and it most certainly isn't funny. How very dare I?

actually the assault is rather incidious....after consuming the beans..the digestive tract goes to work..whereas "gas" is formed and expelled (in the gaseous state) for all to expereince...typically a foul odor...so yes, beans can be used as a means of assault..but more an assault on the senses than anything!

anytime you make someone believe you are going to give them 'unwanted contact', it's assault. The weapon or means doesn't matter.
When you actually strike or touch that person, it's battery.
You can have Assault & Battery (person sees the beans coming and is hit by the beans), or Assult (sees the beans but isn't hit) or battery (hit by the beans but didn't see them coming).
Who wants to get hit with beans, baked or otherwise.

Assault is a threat of violence and throwing beans at someone would fit the definition of assault. You can also get charged with assault for dumping your drink on someone, spitting on someone, or throwing any other food on someone.

there are various thousands of criminal codes interior the international. i'll assume you're speaking related to the criminal code enacted by utilising the legislature of my state. throwing a drink "over" somebody would be a battery in the event that they perceived the drink or if the thrower meant to hit the guy. Throwing a drink directly to somebody would be a battery if the guy did not consent.
