The bearings will run dry, overheat and then seize up.
Don't run it without gearbox oil.
If your gear box seizes of course it will stop you from engaging gears.

Gearbox oil is essential to smooth changing and reduced wear there are two types of oil used Atf although it is auto transmission fluid, it is used as Manuel gearbox oil on BMW and many other makes .The other is transmissions that have lifetime oil. which takes a different oil. I run a BMW 323i Manuel transmission with "lifetime" oil but I advocate changing it at 70000 miles from gearbox and BMW enthusiasts agree with this particularly higher mileage cars.
If you want the best from your car always buy the best oils and change regularly. It is false economy to use mineral oils , far better to pay the extra for Mobil 1or silkelene etc, it repays you by getting better mpg, much better wear resistance and more power and a quieter engine, and longer period between oil changes, so it works out cheaper long term than cheap and nasty oils.

Need to look at these:

1] Was the replacement gearbox any good to start with?

2] Was it installed correctly?

3] Did you adjust the selector mechanism?

4] You may have knackered the clutch in the process.

Depends don't know the car but if it has separate oil for the gearbox and you drove it, the gears would weld together and ruin it. Most car either use sealed gearbox's or the engine oil act's as gear box oil. get it checked out asap mate.

There's not supposed to be any gearbox oil in your engine. If you don't have any gearbox oil in your gearbox though the transmission will sieze and you will be out a boatload of money.

Do not drive until you can top it up.
