That area is pretty close to a potential hernia pull...did you lift or strain anything heavy recently? If the pain persists, ask your nurse or doctor.

Superficially there are some muscles there, the intercostal muscles that act in between the ribs themselves. But often what is making that sharp clutching pain is the linings of the sack that encloses the lungs, the pleura. Usually the inner and outer linings of the sack have a thin film of mucus between them so they glide smoothly across each other during respiration and movement. But sometimes the two surfaces rub directly against each other and boy does that hurt. Sometimes there can be a disease process involved in that space and can cause serious breathing difficulty. But mostly, its just the random rubbing that can bring you up short for a little while.

sometimes its a tiny bit of air thats trapped around certain organs. The tummy and abdominal muscles do tend to hurt sometimes. Keep an eye on when its happening and try and work out if you are doing something or eating something that triggers it off or sitting cetain ways that onset the pain. Feel your body for any changes and try and be in tune with your body. The more we understand and look after ourselves, the better we get.

It could be gas build-up in the Transverse/Descending Colon. Then again, it could be a simple muscle strain. If it's persistant or painful, get it checked out! A simple XRay may provide the solution.
