What is the correct way to describe an object that is both yours and someone else's (Bob and mine's/my house?)

For example, someone asks you, "Whose house is that?" and the house belongs to both Bob and you. However, you do not want to say, "It's Bob's and mine." You want to say, "It's Bob's and ____ house." This is a question that has always confounded my sister and me. Normally we would just use the former, but we were just wondering what the correct usage would be. Thanks in advance!

Bob's house. My house. So when you put them together, it's Bob's and my house. Sounds off---but it's correct. That's why you always prefer to say "It's Bob's and mine" and avoid the problem. You could also say "It belongs to Bob and me."

You're right. It is a little awkward to deal with, which is why you ultimately end up saying it's "Bob's and mine,'' which is probably what I'd say, too. Of course, you could always work around it by saying it belongs to "Bob and me." But in handling your preferred approach, I'd go with "It's Bob's and my house."
