A defiant Democratic-controlled Senate passed legislation Thursday that would require the start of troop withdrawals from Iraq by Oct. 1, propelling Congress toward a historic veto showdown with President Bush on the war.

Bush is expected to veto the bill. I don't remember much from my government classes, but is there anyway that even if Bush does veto the bill, that congress can still pass the bill?

Sure; they can vote to override. But there aren't even CLOSE to enough votes (2/3 majority) to make that happen.

President, Senate, and Judiciary. House and Senate can over-ride Presidential veto with 2/3rds majority. Judiciary (Supreme Court) has final veto on a law, cannot be overruled.

Congree must get a 2/3 majority vote to over ride the Presidents veto. Which they do not have currently. That is why this bill is symbolic and has no teeth. Instead of comming together and figuring out a way to win the war they are making sure there base and special interests are given what they want. Not that Republicans are doing the same thing. We need ideas without political whippiness and leadership that will bring us to a positive outcome in the war.

2/3 majority vote in congress. That is the way one over rides a presidential veto.

yes, congress can override a presidential veto, but they would need a minimum of a 2/3 majority from both the house and senate. Since the republican/democratic membership of each house is roughly 50/50 with one or two more on the democratic side than the republican side, it is doubtful that, that many republicans would break ranks and vote with the dems.

Yes, they can over-ride a veto if they have a 2/3's majority vote in favor of the legislation. The democrats already know that they do not have the support or the votes so it won't happen.

They have to vote on it again post-veto and pass it with a 2/3d's majority.

Could they be this stupid? We shall see. They obviously have not considered the consequences of legislatively defeating our own armed forces yet a second time. I'm not sure how long the American government can continue to cry "Wolf" and keep getting the honorable young men and women of America to respond.

Remember what ultimately happened to the little boy who cried "Wolf"? In the gentler version of the story, he was solidly spanked. In another, he got eaten by a wolf.

Sure there is, a 2/3 majority to override. It will never happen in this case. They barely had the votes to pass it in the first place. The only way they got the simple majority was to add in billions of dollars in pork. And what is up with all the thumbs down for all the right answers?

there's a distinction between earmarks and beef, billo. No pinheads, bear in ideas? And particular, what might seem as a waste to you will possibly not seem to be a waste to somebody else. like the honeybee lab--scientists have reported our honeybee inhabitants is suffering some as yet unknown stress and demise off--and risking the pollination of billions of greenbacks in our farm vegetation. So interpreting the bees is had to our agricultural achievement. See? Now to an uneducated moron, that would desire to be considered wasteful, yet to not the farmers and nutrition industry. And as for the sean hannity-made-up-container-mouse-accusations, properly, that's in simple terms made up crap via a paid repube shill. comparable with the swine rubbish, and that buffalo invoice factor--isn't that in the process wyoming, abode state to dick(head) darth cheney?

The only way is to get 60 votes in the senate and thats not gonna happen. The dem's cant get that many republicans to jump across the aisle. So deal with it, it's not gonna pass.
