as a temp surely you can leave at any time, you don't even have to accept the work they offer you. however just incase read your contract, or if you don't have a copy ask them to show you where this is stated in your contract

The notice you have to give is usually determined by your contract of employment with the temping agency. Ask them fo a copy if you have not got one.
As a rule of thumb however, if you get paid weekly then your notice should be weekly. But as I said it depends on the agreement/contract you signed on taking up with the agency.
There is no problem here, if you don't work for them, during the 4 week period as you have started your new job, what can they do to you, sack you ! Doesn't matter as you already have a new job anyway, they will just stop paying you.
If you cannot give your new employer a P45, then they will complete a P46, so that is not a problem either. Just go for it!!!

I didn't think that temp workers employed through an agency actually had a notice period.
From my understanding they can remove you from a temp assignment without having to find another one suitable for you.
Check www.acas.org.uk and www.rec.uk.com
There is a proposal by the government to increase the rights of temp workers, (including notice periods and so on), but I don't think anything's happened yet as the recruitment agencies obviously won't like that!
It seems to me that giving temp workers notice periods thereby devalues the whole concept of a temp. They fill a need, and can be easily got rid of when the need no longer exists!

I worked as a temp for years. I never heard of 2 weeks notice much less 4 weeks. Did they give you a reason? That's the beauty of temping -- you don't really work for the company, and could leave the next day if you found something better.

Are you going permanent at the same company you're temping at? If so, then they know.
If not, then 2 weeks' notice is appropriate.

It should be in the terms of the contract that you signed with them when you first started, but if you do not have a contract then you don't need to give notice. You can ask to decrease it but they can decline this.
