Hamsters are fairly inexpensive.Depending on which store you go to and the color of the hamster the price can vary from 4 dollars to 12 dollars. Some breeders offer them a little cheaper.Check your local news paper classified ads.
so you know what you are buying there are only 5 species of hamsters sold as pets these are the,Syrian also known as the Golden Hamster. All other species are smaller and known as dwarf hamsters. They are the Campbell's Hamster,Winter White Hamster,Chinese Hamster and the Roborovski Hamster. At a pet store you may see teddy bear hamsters, black bear.fancy hamsters as well as a host of other names. All of these types of hamster are just a different colored golden hamster (aka Syrian)though the Color and hair length varies among individuals they are still the same type of hamster.Stores and breeders use color and hair lengths as marketing ploys to charge more money. Many employees of pet stores do not know this information.

This depends on where you go to get it, and what type of hamster it is, and possibly, your area. I breed Roborovski's dwarf hamsters and Campbell's dwarf hamsters. I am the only private breeder in this area of Roborovski's dwarf hamsters, and they are somewhat difficult to breed (they don't breed freely like other hamsters), so around here they are one of the most expensive hamsters you can buy. I sell them for 10 dollars each. A store that buys them from me retails them for 19.99 each. The Campbell's I sell for five dollars each, the store that buys from me retails them for fourteen dollars each. Syrian hamsters are generally ten dollars each at the pet store that buys from me, but they are independently owned. If you go to PetSmart or PetCo, they will sell you Syrian hamsters for upwards of twenty dollars just for a fancy name ("Panda Bear" "Black Bear") that really doesn't mean anything except their color (and they aren't rare colors). I also saw in my local PetSmart a Campbell's dwarf hamster being sold for 25 dollars as a "Blackberry Hamster", and it wasn't even black! It was the standard wild color that needs no special genes to achieve, called agouti. So be careful of expensive hamsters in pet stores.. not only are they often ill and poorly socialized, they also try to scam you with nifty names that don't mean anything. Try to buy from a private breeder, if at all possible. Lots of breeders are listed on the website link I provide. Good luck!

Not a lot. The initial out lay is quite expensive depending on the type of penthouse you want it to live in.
Vets bills are another thing.
If it gets ill, you need to take out a mini mortgage. And if the poor little blighter is too ill to recover it cost more to put it down than it did to buy it!
