Try Open Office, it's an open source project and completely free. It has it's own file extension by default but can also save in Microsoft Words Doc extension. This means you can create documents which could be used at school, college or work in Word. It is almost identical to Word and you will find it easy enough to switch to. It can be downloaded from the web and is often given away on magazine cover discs.Hope this helps.

OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) is the generally accepted best alternative. It doesn't have an equivalent to Outlook, though. If you want an offline email program (instead of handling it all online, like, say, Yahoo!) then go for Thunderbird (www.mozilla.org) (and its addon, named "Lightning", if you need calendaring functions)
Note that OpenOffice, because it is such a complex and powerful piece of software, is a VERY long download. Especially if you're on a dialup connection, you may want to consider buying the (inexpensive) CD ($14 US) from, say, Amazon. After twice trying to download on my puny dialup line, I gave up and bought the CD.
OpenOffice is surprisingly easy to use!

Well you can try to get a copied CD of Office from somewhere, as long as you get the license key too...
or ditto: Open Office or Star Office
or Tesco have brought out their own budget office package which probably does everthing - in fact it's a revamped/rebranded version of a previously existing package which I can't remember the name of now. See http://www.tescosoftware.com/

Yes there is. It's called Openoffice and you can get it for free by download. You can also get one called Star Office which costs a little I believe.
