So. I'm getting married in a church of christ. I was raised in this church and that is where I want to get married and such. However, this church only allows acappella music to be played in the church. Even the wedding march has to be acappella. Omg. I so totally don't know what I'm going to do about this. I've looked it up on limewire and haven't found much. Just some of Carrie Underwood from American Idol. However, I would like country. Someone please help. Okay thnks bye!!

I am a member of the Church of Christ and when I got married at the church building we used instrumental music. I was also once a member of a congregation that did not allow instruments in weddings at their building.

The reason the congregation I attended did not allow it was this. They believe that instruments should not be used in worship. (If you want detail on this position, let me know. This is not your question, so I will not go into the instruments in worship explanation now.)

They realized that a wedding is not a worship service, but because many who attend the wedding may have never been inside a church of Christ building, they may think the instrument is there all of the time and they may think the Church of Christ is like other churches in this matter. They did not want the presence of an instrument to be seen a sign that instruments are acceptable in the (worship of the) church. They did not want this to be viewed an approval of instrumental music in Christian worship.

Now, about your problem, as you know congregations of the Church of Christ are autonomous (independent). It is up to the eldership of each congregation to determine the best way to handle this issue.

Not all congregations see a problem with instruments in weddings; therefore, you may find another congregation of the Church of Christ that will allow you to have the music you have chosen in their building. Check with other congregations in the area.

If there are no other congregations, their preacher may still be willing to conduct the service at another cite (civic center, another church, etc.).

Finally, if you want your wedding at that church building, speak to the eldership. You may be able to come to some type of compromise (instruments only with non-religious music, etc.).
In the end, however, if you want to use that church’s facilities, you will have to follow their rules. Even if you do not agree with their decision, they have the prerogative to establish how their own building will and will not be used.

The church may also have acapella recorded wedding music you could use, or a group of their best singers may be willing to sing "live" at the ceremony. It won't hurt to ask about these options.

Good luck and congratulations on your up-coming wedding! May you have a long and happy life together!

Have you tried the group....Acappella? They are a Church of Christ mainstay since, oh, about 1980.

http://www.acappella.org/ (Use the search term WEDDING and you'll find their whole wedding series.)

By the way, why bother with them if they are asking you to so seriously alter your special day? They will not stop there (they probably have imposed other ridiculous beliefs on you before). I grew up cofc too, and I am through letting them tell me how to be in order to be saved, and that if I veer from their arbitrarily prescribed path that I'm going to hell!

Country music is the devil. It's time for you to step into the light of Bluegrass. Just kidding, but seriously, look for some a capella numbers by:
Blue Highway
The Del McCoury Band
The Gibson Brothers
J.D. Crowe and the New South

Dumb dumb dumb dumb(sorry that was very Birdgette Jones). You could search online for best acapella songs. There are so many singers who have to sing acapella so there has to be a good list.
