There is a personality type that most often end up in jail. Anti - social personality disorder. They are often times mentally unstable in the sense of not complying with societies rules. There are some inmates with brains, but it is a misconception that is the majority. As for brawn that too is a stereotype, but is a favorite pasttime for those in the jail to lift weights.

Practically all of incarcerated men are diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder. It's between 65 and 75 percent, depending on the location.
Diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV-TR)
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV, a widely used manual for diagnosing mental and behavioral disorders, defines antisocial personality disorder as a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15, as indicated by three (or more) of the following:
1. failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest
2. deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure
3. impulsivity or failure to plan ahead
4. irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults
5. reckless disregard for safety of self or others
6. consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain steady work or honor financial obligations
7. lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another
The manual lists the following additional necessary criteria:
* The individual is at least 18 years of age.
* There is evidence of conduct disorder with onset before age 15 years.
* The occurrence of antisocial behavior is not exclusively during the course of Schizophrenia or a Manic Episode.
A mnemonic that can be used to remember the criteria for antisocial personality disorder is CORRUPT:
* C - cannot follow law
* O - obligations ignored
* R - remorselessness
* R - recklessness
* U - underhandedness
* P - planning deficit
* T - temper

possibly. My cousin is a good looking guy, genius IQ, but until recently he was in and out of jail. I think they get bored and have to find something to do, even if it's not the right thing.

For heaven's sake...why don't you just ask the question that you really mean? You've been repeating the same question for days now...and dancing around the subject. This is not some cliff hanger, and the question isn't that interesting as it is...so spit it out already!

Sometimes, but not necessarily. A lot depends on their personalities and values. Criminals come in all shapes and sizes.
