Last night I went to the mall, and there was this mother and her two daughters in front of me swearing at each other, using the F word and such. WHen they left the store, they were all smoking together.

Call me old fashioned, but I thought that the swearing was rude and inappropriate and I thought it was the weirdest thing that the lady was smoking WITH her kids.

What do you guys think?

I don't think so. My mom never swore around me and I didn't swear at her until I was an angry teenager. Even then, she didn't swear back at me. I would try as hard as I could not to swear around my kids until they were at least teenagers and even then I'd try not to. Yesterday, my neighbor was yelling at her kids (all under age 7) and using the f-word the whole time. She was yelling, "Get the f*** away from that!" and "Shut the f*** up!" It didn't even phase the kids because they are so used to it.

I did have a friend when I was younger that swore all the time 'with' her kids. She was also one of those parents that occasionally smoked pot around her kids. The uncle used to come over and drink and smoke with the kids too. I always thought they were nice people but it was weird. Her children also called her by her first name most of the time. It's not how I would raise my children (I hope)

I'm an african american female....this in my life..well the cursing wasn't unusal....Being clear, my parents cursed at certain times because of certain things but I never did with them or to them....They smoked all the time and I never had the urge to smoke..My parents gave me the 411 about it and why they did it and it never made any since to me so I just didn't do it....

I think people raise there children how they see fit....we can't judge them....I turned out fine

The smoking is out of the question. My kids both know that their grandfather (my dad) died of lung cancer after smoking for 50 years. In fact, they're sick of hearing about it but I think it gets the point across.

The swearing is bad too, and I try my hardest not to in front of them, though I'm not always successful. I don't want to hear it from them so I try not to let them hear it from me.

I agree. I don't think parents should be swearing to their children and children to their parents. That's being disrectful and wrong. I'd never do that to my children if I had any and I won't take it from them. I don't even swear to my nieces and nephews and my brother and sis in law never swear to my niece and nephew and I know my other brother and his woman would never do that to my niece. I just don't like it.

I use very little foul language--it's a sign of illiteracy to
not be able to find legitimate words to express oneself
without resorting to gutter talk.
