Factor it as (x-3)(x^2 -4)=(x-3)(x-2)(x+2).

The roots are 3,2, and -2.

x^3-3x^2-4x+12=0

Factor x^2 out of first two terms
and -4 out of next two terms.

x^2(x-3) - 4(x-3) = 0

Now factor out x-3

(x-3)(x^2-4) = 0

or

(x-3)(x+2)(x-2) = 0

so the roots are x=3, x=2, x=-2
