You could argue that time is not dependent on the "markers" of time. I.E. time passes whether or not there's anything to account it by. God being all-knowing, He wouldn't need these to tell how long had elapsed.

In Genesis 1, the first thing that God says is "Let there be light" - He didn't specify the source of the light, or where it would reflect off of or on to. He just said "Let there be light." (verse 3)and there was light. Before then, there was no light at all. At that instant, all darkness was dispelled, because as you know, darkness and light can't co-exist in the same place. If you turn a light on in a room, the darkness in that room vanishes. So in creating light, God divided the light from the darkness. (verse 4). Then He named the difference between light and darkness. He called the bright white light - "day", and the dark blackness "night". So, as soon as this existed, that was the very first "day" - make sense?
Then further down in verses 16 and 17, it said that He made (implying that it wasn't there before) - two great lights - one to RULE the day, and one to RULE the night. Meaning He gave authority to those reflecting agents to do what they were created to do to separate the light from the darkness. He said that the greater light would rule the day (the sun) - and this is obvious, as we still have much more light during the day than we do at night - and the lesser to rule the night. Thier job, was to divide the light and the darkness. Both give light. The sun gives light during the day, and rules the day. The moon gives light at night, and rules the night.
What I love about God is that even at night, when it is really dark - I am convinced that He gave us the moon and the stars to reflect light into the darkness - so that even when it was/is dark - we always had the promise of day again. :-) One of Jesus' Names is the "Bright and Morning Star" - the brightest star when it is dark is the Morning Star. And He was and is the Light of the world, even when it is really dark! Does this answer your question?
Great question!!! Ask me another one!!

Im a Christian and also a Preachers daughter and a preschool sunday school teacher by the way. Heres my answer...
It said he divided night from the day, so in other words- If God wants to make light appear with no sun present he can do that. He's God. The first thing he said was "Let there be light," not, "Let their be something to make the light." He just made it. Later on, he made the sun and the moon to rule the day and the night to give us a sense of comfort in the times of darkness. The sun might be more for HEAT rather than light for all we know... -and the moon could be for light at night. No one can be sure because obviously... we werent there. LOL But, thats just my opinion. Hope this gets you thinking! That was a pretty good question.

You don't want to debate because there is no proof on the creation side. Genesis is a cobbled together from at least 4 sources trying to explain the history of the world before science to a bunch of goat herders. Realistic science doesn't have anything to do with the myths described. The compilers of Genesis really didn't care to think about what causes "light and dark" they just wanted to convince the reader that their version of the desert war god was the god in charge of everything.

For understanding Genesis 1 correctly. A scientific Understanding of what is light and what is energy is basically required. Presently according to The late Richard Feynman "scientist do not really understand what energy is. .However per Quantron Theory of the Universe light is an entity which is observable by collision experiments. Therefore ,The first creation of basic mass structure as outlined in Genesis 1 ,had be the smallest basic mass of the Universe which is the particle of light of which all complex mass structures as the sun was composed of as well as all the elements and compound of the earth.
Hence The particle of light being being formed out of the substance of space (refered to as the void and in Chinese beliefs as the CHI), bacame the basic masss structure (or fractal of the Universe)by which all atomics structures and elementary atomic particles consist of.
This is where the confict of science and Biblical description appear to confict.
The Sun is the source of light radiation which enables us to see. However The light mass particle is an invisible entity that cannot be shadowed. The sun was constructed out the atomic structure which were assembled out of these basic particles.
Therefore The account of Creation of the Holy Bible gives the correct sequence of mass formation, The appearent contradiction stems from the lack of scientific understanding of what the composision of light is,by the world of physics .
It is much easier to accept our Creator's revelation of the mystery of Creation than to wait a billion year for the scientist to give us a scientific explanation to any high degree of certainty.

belief is never questioned, that's because there are no answers. That's the one thing keeping religions alive, mystery, Religions don't try to explain scientifically their histories, they only ask for belief. So give up on trying to find answers where there are none, trust me, you ain't going anywhere.
