Many people think it's fake because of the Hollywood and the hype many martial artists perpetuate. Take breaking a board. It really isn't hard to break a pine board, you just need the right board and a little instruction.
Fighting requires you be able to improvise. Someone who has memorized the forms can get whipped by a brawler. There are blackbelts that don't know how to fight, for all their effort they might as well be dancing. That's why Bruce Lee was big on formless martial arts.
To sum it up martial arts aren't fake, but there are plenty of fake martial artists.

Well, some people just don't believe that human body can be a very effective weapon. Quite frankly, if a thread can kill, anything else can be turn into a weapon.
Also, Kung Fu fighters did not overthrow any of the chinese government. When western countries (US included) first started abused China in late 19th century, flesh and blood of Kung Fu fighters could not complete against guns and the cannons of the west. Plus, how could a disorganized group of Kung-Fu fighters ever overthrow any government?
Kung Fu outlawed? I am not so sure of that either. Had Communist China tried to stop the martial arts, It wouldn't have been effective, especially since Shaolin Temple would keep on practicing exercises, so the point is moot.
-------------------------
Here is another thought: those that do not believe martial artists might be boxing fans. Should set up a match between a boxing champion and a top martial artist. lol.

Partly due to the misconception that martial arts is what is depicted in kung fu movies, partly due to misleading breaking demonstrations, and partly due to the growing number of schools that are the MA equivalent of diploma mills.
If you approach martial arts as a fighting system that involves a lot of time to develop skill, then of course it's real. If you approach it as an exercise system that can also be used in self-defense, then that too is real. But if you approach it as something that will give you supernatural powers or some secret knowledge, then people who know better will laugh in your face.
If what you practice is a martial art and not "bullshido", then you need not worry what others think. Just remember two facts - you aren't faster than bullets, and a formal martial art isn't the only way someone can be a skilled fighter.

Most people agree on the following list of best martial arts for real life situations: krav maga, Brazilian jiujitsu, muay Thai kickboxing. Under good instructors, these martial arts teach you how to defend yourself in realistic situations with the most brutal attacks you can deliver. They focus on different aspect of the fight, but in the end, they are probably the best in their various fields. Also, don't forget wrestling. Wrestling is not considered a martial art, but it is still a potent self defense tool. After you become a proficient wrestler, then most people will not be able to stop you from putting them on the ground and holding them there (which is certainly a good thing if you happen to be taken to court for getting into a fight). Plus, you can take wrestling through your high school and not have to worry about paying an instructor or having mom and dad drive you to lessons. Secondly, you are 14. Anything that doesn't involve flashing lights, loud noises, or boobs isn't likely to hold your attention for very long. You have to focus in order to get something out of a martial art. In the end, learning to take care of yourself in a fight takes time and patience. Yes, it will be boring, but if you're serious, then you'll devote yourself to the pursuit. Good luck.

How could it be fake? Obviously you are learning types of fighting and defense moves. Whether you punch, kick, chop, etc. someone, it is still striking them with part of your body, or holding them with some part of your body. Do you do some crazy stuff where you claim to not have to contact the other person? I have heard people say they can knock someone down without actually making any contact with the other person. But that really isn't martial arts.

I believe it is, certainly. I have read about it and have seen some experts practice in the park. It requires a very strong discipline too. I know there are many styles, Actually, I am surprised at your question as I would have thought people would think it more real than not.

That is ridiculous...It is like saying is Yoga real or are riots real or even are biscuits real. It is REAL by the definition that it exists...now if they doubt the effectiveness, that is their perrogotive...maybe you should kick their a$$ and show them how real it is...
