DSTR - Actually, no. I am not looking for homework help. I graduated from college a decade ago. Looking at all of the virulent responses to other questions prompted this one.

When people have preconceived notions about the other side, they can't listen to the other side objectively. They sort of put on a filter in which they hear the part of the other side's argument that confirms their preconceived notions and then become deaf to any suggestion that the other side may be right and they may be wrong.

It causes them to listen to one another less and less and makes it easier to dismiss their ideas.

Not very productive, but that's human nature for ya. We identify with one group and tend to exclude the other groups.
