At a pet store near me they have a Sulcata and a German Tortoise. I know that they both get very large and live a long time, i'm just wondering if those would be okay for a beginner such as myself, or if i should search around for another kind of tortiose more suitable for a beginner.

The Sulcata tortoise gets VERY large very quickly. There is, as far as I know, no such animals as a German tortoise. I have a six-year-old Sulcata that weighs 40 lbs and eats a serious amount of grass. Greek tortoises I have known are shy but can grow on you. The Horsfeld's tortoise does not grow large. They are very lively and can escape from just about anything. The box turtle--although not a tortoise--is a good first turtle--they are pretty hardy and learn to recognize people.

I own a sulcata, and if you're not willing to dedicate years of expensive care, and aren't in a home with a large enough yard/indoor area to keep it. Don't buy this guy, though they can start out small, my husband makes jokes of him eating us out of house and home. But, on the plus side their very friendly, and mine always greets me happily.

I also own a Russian Tortoise, and their also great, unshy turtles. But in my experience, they prefer the outside. I built mine a small play pen, but if your weather permits it, he'd probably be happier outside all year, and most people suggest this.

Depends on how big you want, their care & needs ( some get huge, some are illegal to have - never catch wild reptiles or animals & try to make them pets any way ) am gonna add a very good reptile site for you as well...they are knowledgable & deal only in captive bred reptiles...Take Care & Be Well

I love the tortoise also. But, I think you should start with a baby one/ Than it will stay home. I had adult and they always left to head back to where they came from.
