You should call a local veterinary office in your area, they can walk you through what they do and you can see hands on what exactly everyone's function at a vet clinic is. We often do them at our vet clinic and most people find it very interesting and useful in their reports. Most clinics are more than willing to help you out.

I'm a veterinary nurse in England - called vet technician or assistant in America I think.

Vet nurses have to do about 2 years of on the job training to qualify, including two (horrible) portfolios as well as two lots of practical and written exams. I also did a degree in vet nursing which is a fairly new development and really helped advance my background knowledge.

Nurses main duties basically included assisting the vets: performing anaesthetics and recovering animals, taking/processing blood samples, placing catheters and drips, monitoring animals, administering meds, reception duties, CLEANING in quite a big way, nurse clinics (many and varied) and advising owners. Nurses are also allowed to castrate cats and do such basic procedures as flushing rabbits tear ducts and dental work (not extractions). It's a fabulous job!
