I am trying to find a laptop for basically downloading music and surfing the net. Not too much gaming (maybe the occasional monopoly). It doesn't need to be crazy technically savvy. How about 256mb, and 40gb?

It does not sound like you need much.

I would recommend 512 MB or 1GB RAM is pretty cheep and 1GB is a minimum for Vista.

How much music are you going to download? a lot of 20GB will disappear with the OS and programs, 80GB would give much more breathing room, especially if you decide that you want to download videos too. Also, adding RAM is not too bad, although some laptops are difficult to get to. You can't add a second internal hard drive and copying a small one to a big one is a pain.
