I have a new home in southern Cali that has the typical sandstone colored 6' high block walls surrounding the back yard. It is L shaped 70' x 50'. Currently it is planted with grass. What are some ideas of how to deal with those plain block walls?

Oh, they are daunting in the beginning. Sorry to hear there is grass already there because that means a sprinkler system is in place. DRAT! Normally I'd suggest perimeter planting beds of varying widths including some out about 10 feet to allow for small to medium sized trees to grow unobstructed by the walls (and not within the lawns), giving the yard some interesting shape and wall covering. Elsewhere smaller shrubs could grow against the walls.

But since you have the lawn already there, I hope they left some perimeter planting area!! Consider vines, shrubs that tolerate shearing against the walls, trees within the lawn that break up the long wall expanses. Also good quality and strong trellis can be put against the walls and painted an intersting color. They could hold a light vine or climbing rose, but it's their architectural look and color that provide the design. You can put a fountain near or onto a wall for interest and sound. And yes, you can paint a mural onto a section of wall, but I hate to paint directly onto the walls, once you start painting then you have upkeep trying to keep it looking good.

Color! Color! Color! Hydraenga shrubs are a great way to bring in alot of color- get the ever-blooming ones that bloom all season long and repeat bloom.

Living in California, you have the luxury of many tropical plants and flowers. Palms would be graceful and beautiful.

Start with a theme, choose colors that will pop and really stand out. Like reds, purples and yellows combined with a variety of greens. Bring in some variegated plants for interest. If you have the budget, a water feature is always beautiful. Have fun with it!!

I turned a yard into a desert, cactus environment. Some tall cactus against that block walls would look good. You don't have to do much maintenance or watering. And so-cal is the perfect environment for it...

Vines or Ivy, Smaller shurbs or tress.... It just varies to what you like. Just hide it a bit. Or even put up a latice. That might look nice.
