There's no cable on your Mercury, the speedometer is electronic. There's a small motor and gear that runs the odometer, either the gear or the motor has died. Most frequently, it's the gear, which gets stripped over time as the plastic gets brittle with age, coupled with the pressure applied to the gear when the trip odometer is reset.

It's electronic on that model... as someone said, the odometer on that style cluster (used on ranger and explorers) are known for breaking.. the motor for the odometer and speedometer is the same so I'm guessing the gear.
Unfortuneately you are looking at a new cluster.

Usually the odometer and speedo are controled by the same cable unless they are electronic. I have never heard of one working with out the other?

Can't be the cable since the odo works. Must be in the pickup in the speedo itself. Could also be in the cruise control. Do you have CC? The speed pickup is probably in the CC module.
