I agree with Haleiwa... most people aren't racist and don't mean any harm. And anymore most of the arguing has to do with aparthied and let's just say; even if gov'ts throughout the world make discrimination illegal, people are still going to feel more comfortable with others of their own race. Heck, it goes farther than that, most people have friends that have the same eye color, hair color, dress the same, same all around interest. I do applaud people who have multicutural friends and I myself have friends of different races, hair colors, etc but most people are more comfortable with their own.
It goes back to cavemen times (if you believe in evolution). Early man had instinctal fears of different tribes, they were more likely to kill each other than to be civilized. That's why there was isolation. It's normal to stay away from what you do not know or fear (it's like a survival instinct).
To answer your question it can be positive that it can bring unity and pride in your family heritage or strenghth in your religious/political beliefs (speaking of all aspects of discrimination). The downside to that is harrassment and abuse of other cultures.
And outside of physical appearance and belief systems, people normally have gut feelings that tell them if something's okay or not and people also have auras (magnetic fields around them) that radiate energy to others to let them know if they are good people or not. And sometimes if someone's giving you a really bad vibe, it's best to stay away.

Discrimination is simply the act of choosing based on a bias or preference. People disciminate all the time....let's go to this restaurant, their food is better than that one....this house is in a safer neighborhood than that one...etc.
In many respects, "discriminating tastes" motivate society - we want the bigger house, the nicer car, the designer clothing, the better education, and so we work to achieve those things.
When people hear "discrimination" they generally equate it with racism, or a bias against certain types of people - females, the elderly, gays, and so on. Making choices based on characteristics that are not pertinent, e.g., assuming that someone can't perform a job because of their race or gender, is simply a poor use of logic and decision-making ability.

Yes it can be but it is still discrimination in a negative sense. Any time one segment of a society is held up a little higher in any way for any reason , that is discrimination. The word itself gives it a meaning - to single out. Affirmative action in employment, housing, policy and legislation which favours women, seniors, immigrants, race and color :it's all discriminatory.
Your paper sounds interesting.

Interesting thought. Let me throw something to you:
What is the difference between discrimination to equality or discrimination to excellence?
In one we strive to make people equal irregarless of their ability and in the second we encourage people to be the best.
Who do you want handling your medical care, legal care, repairing your car?
If you are talking about discrimination based on race, that will be a long time coming. As long as we judge first by appearances; size, color, beauty, what people wear, where they live, where they went to school, etc then we will never be free of discrimination.
I doubt we will ever celebrate our differences, but continue to embrace our likeness.

Yes, positive discrimination is sometimes practised, often in job situations where the employer wants a more ethnically balance workforce and positive discrimination accelerates the employment of under represented groups which can include ethnic minorities, disabled people and women.
However it is not always legal so cannot be applied generally.

YES!!! Discrimination against stupid people...
As far as racism...that is something that the government made up to make money..
If you look at REAL people in society, only the severely uneducated are still racist. The world is too small for all that.
