I had some problems at the beginning of my pregnancy (I'm 17 weeks and fine now) so they did early ultrasounds to determine how far along I was and what might be wrong. The doctor said I was 5-6 weeks and that it looked like I may have conceived twins but was only carrying one, that the other may have miscarried VERY early and that was what caused my problems. He called it a vanishing twin, based on my uterus being somewhat misshapen (kind of lopsided) with what looked like a line across the middle of it. The baby's heartbeat was already strong and the next week things looked normal again and I haven't had any problems since.

Has anybody else had this happen?

This happened to me with my daughter, who is now 4. I assumed I had a miscarriage - it happened at work! However, after visiting the doctor, I was still pregnant. The doctor explained similar to what you said. It didn't cause any problems throughout the pregnancy nor with the birth. Well, my daughter is now a happy and healthy 4 year old, so it happens.

I know several woman who have experienced this -- with most it was a vanishing twin that resulted in a normal healthy singleton pregnancy, while another friend of mine apparently started out pregnant with triplets but by her next ultrasound it was twins. For myself, we had one pregnancy where I suspected a vanishing twin but nothing confirmed.

Vanishing twin syndrome is actually thought to be very common. Experts have long since confirmed that the incidence of multiple pregnancies is far greater than the incidence of multiple births. Some statistics suggest that as many as one in eight pregnancies begin as multiple pregnancies. Generally the "vanishing" twin spontaneously aborts during the first trimester; the tissue is usually absorbed by the placenta, the mother, or the surviving twin. The frequency with which this occurs is becoming known because of the increased use of early ultrasound.

I'm sorry you had this happen -- may the rest of your pregnancy be happy healthy and stress-free.

I havent had this personally happen, but my sister in law did. She experienced a miscarriage and the doctor told her she was too. After that was all done she never did get a cycle and went back into the doctor, she was still pregnant the right time as if she never misscarried. A RN friend who worked on labour and delivery told her she was carrying twins and misscarried one of them. She said that sometimes your body will realize it cant hold the two and get rid of one. Or there was something wrong with the misscarried twin.. Anyway the baby turned out fine, so good luck.

This happened to my cousin. Twins run in my family. An 18 week ultrasound brought back a similar result as yours. They told her she had a disappearing twin, probably like 9-10 weeks into the pregnancy.

I guess after it happens your body and the remaining baby's body have to adust a little then you get back to normal.

yes, my son was a twin starting out and i had known about it. Then one morning i woke up very bloody, went to the hospital and they said that i was having a miscarriage, but it was just one of the twins. I went thru the rest of my pregnancy with just him and he was fine, nothing wrong with him at birth either. Now he's a healthy 3 year old boy!

Many sleep issues are symptoms of demonic influence. She should never be around people she thinks are possessed all alone. The disciples were went out in pairs. We are to never go into the enemy's camp alone. I can tell you that half of what the homeless man told her is true. When you deal with the enemy, he always tells partial truths. The Bible also tells us that the sins of the father are passed onto our children. I know personally that what parents do can open up attack on children. The only thing to do is to present her with God's truth and get her to repent for the sins she is committing.

my little sister was an IVF baby and her twin stopped growing and "vanished" after my mom carrying the baby for 3 months so yes it happens but rarely. And you dont neseccarily miscarry the baby because my mom never bled just went for a rountine u/s and saw the 2nd baby was gone

no, but I have heard of it, and it is quite normal. If there is something dreadfully wrong with the baby a miscarriage is nature's way of taking care of it, cruel as that may sound. I'm glad that your other baby is doing well, I'm sure you have mixed feelings of joy and sorrow. Joy over the one you have still inside, and sorrow over the one you've lost. I'm sorry.

I have a dear friend who had something similar (she was actually pregnant with triplets and lost one). She didn't know she was even pregnant for the triplets until she delivered and they examined her placenta. It's actually common (according to my doc) to have vanishing twin, although most don't ever know they were pregnant for twins. Best of luck.

I have never heard of this one, but I can see that this is possible. I would imagine there might be a risk of infection from the remains left inside.
