One of the best things you can do is find out where each candidate stands on issues that are important to you, such as taxes or the environment. After that you can see for yourself which is the best candidate to vote for.

Right wing is the kid who listens to the teacher, does his homework every night and values good manners and knows what he wants out of life and works through obstacles to get it. Will probably have a relationship with someone of the opposite sex, open a savings account and drink once a week or less. Take their kids on holiday once a year, save up and buy and own their own house one day. Cry behind closed doors and smile in public for the most part. Probably get married before having children. Children will probably be taught to say please and thank you and be the same race as the parents. Left wing is the defensive, lazy, cool kid who messes about in class, expects to get life for free and wins the respect of other dossers by proclaiming his selflessness for being left wing when not really understanding anything at all or being particularly philanthropic. Will probably never accomplish much, probably won t get a degree, probably never got smacked as a child and whines about trivial rubbish and hangs out with similar people. This includes people with facial piercings and gays and homeless people, people who dye their hair blue and get tattoos. This is the Left wing.

The left stand for liberal, progressive ideas on social, environmental and other issues with government solutions to problems. The right wing traditonally has a conservative, traditional stance and believes the free market with minimal government interference is the best way to solve problems.
All of this is lost in the current villification of "the other side" by constant ad hominem attacks.

Google the origins of the term "left-wing" and "right-wing." You will find that the original right-wing stood for traditionalism, the monarchy, fuedalism, aristocracy, and the clergy. The original left-wing stoof for the common man, radicalism, and democracy.
Things have not changed much since then.
Today, the left-wing resides in the Democratic Party. Liberals believe that by shifting taxes to those who can better afford it, creating legislation that helps the average worker/citizen/consumer, and creating social programs that get people back to work leads to a stronger middle class and more prosperity. In addition, they believe that people should be free to do what they want to do unless it interferes with the rights of others. Today that includes gay marriage and the right of a women to have an abortion, but in the past it included women's rights, civil rights for minorities, labor rights for workers, invitro fertilization, and support for interracial marriage.
Today, the right-wing resides in the Republican Party. This was not always so. The Republican Party used to be dominated by left-wing radicals/progressives/liberals from the northeast, but that's another story. Conservatives believe in law of the jungle economics. They don't want the government helping people and they believe tax cuts for the rich leads to a stronger economy. In addition, they believe in restricting social decisions based on their conservative interpretation of christianity. Today that means being against gay marriage and abortion, but in the pat it used to mean being against invitro-fertilization, women's rights, and interracial marriage.

"right winged" and "left winged" are just another way of saying democrat or republican because the republicans literally sit on the right side of the aisle and the democrats on the left side when they are in Congress.. so that in and of itself is not an insult. Idealistically Democrats are for limited gun control, pro-choice but finding ways to make it so people don't make that choice as often, raise taxes on the rich, more aid for the poor, get out of Iraq in a year... that's a quick run down.
Republicans are (Idealistically) less regulation on fire arms, pro-life, cut taxes/spend less, fewer social programs (promote capitalism and good will/charity to take care of people) and stay in Iraq until they are fixed.
that's just a brief run down of how the parties stand.. but people are not parties.. and their ideas may vary.

If you listen to the media, the right wing is just your traditional conservatives. The left wing is the moveon.org crowd, the extreme socialists.
