Is it useful? And if so what for exactly?

It depends on how you want to use it and the quality of the one you purchase. I have installed a few and I would not spend the extra on one. The sheathing on the better ones is metal (almost like Greenfield wire covering) and the sound it makes when being pulled out is grating. If it breaks later, you are talking more expense. They have a weight that pulls the sprayer back into the spout and this can get hung-up on items under the sink. Most people don't use them enough to offset the cost.

I had one in my old house. If you buy a really good one like Kohler in polished chrome you usually won't have the problem of them sticking and not being easy to get out, the plastic ones usually break and get hard to pull out. When purchasing sinks now you have the option of soap dispensers and sprays on the base (the part where the faucet sits). I preferred the soap dispenser as opposed to the sprayer and so I went with the faucet that had the spray pull out. I only really used it when cleaning the sink or filling a large Coffee pot with water, same uses that you would use the sprayer on the side of the faucet for. But the one extra feature I was able to do that I can't do with spray on the side is push the button for spray water without pulling out the handle to clean vegetables. That I really miss.

I have one & I personally don't like it that much. It gets hard to pull out after a while, but they are useful for cleaning out the sink and stuff.
