Some of the big tourist spots accept the US Dollar as well as the Euro.. at fixed rates. It's best to exchange it at the airport or bank. You can order pounds ahead of time in the US and have some money exchanged before you head over there.

U.S. Dollars cannot usually be spent in UK except at some Duty Free shops. [More about these in a minute].

Your best bet is to buy American Express dollars or pounds and exchange these as you go.

The Dollar/Pound rate is not in your favour and stand at about $2 = £1. A cup of coffee in London [Star Bucks etc] will set you back about £2 = $4.

Duty Free shops - these are located around central London or at the airport on your departure. You can spend US Dollars in these [no problem] and you will not be paying any UK tax or duty on goods purchased. You may have to prove you are leaving the country, etc.

Go to the main Post Office near you and change it into stirling as they do not charge commission and give the going tourist rate as advertised.
However as the rate is so bad at the moment for $ - £ I would hang on to it for a little while and hope that stirling falls.

Your best bet is to change it over at the bank or post office to get the best rates. Don't go to a desk at the airport/high street, as you'll only be gouged.

Best option for an American would be to skip right over London and go someplace cheaper altogether!

Of course you'll have to change it - shops don't accept the £ in the States do they??!

Best place to get it changed is a post office or somewhere like Thomas Cook as they don't charge you to change it.

Take it to the Post Office (not ever one of those dodgy Bureaus on the high street!)

Then cry as they give you less than half your money in pounds.
