What factors of 40 could add together to get 14? (10 and 4)

So...
(x - 10)(x - 4) = 0

now set each piece equal to zero and solve.

x - 10 = 0
so x = 10

x - 4 = 0
so x = 4

x^2 - 14x + 40 = 0
Steps:

1. Split the middle term:
x^2 - 10x- 4x = 0

2.Find common factors in the first 2 & last 2 equations:
x(x-10) - 4(x-10) = 0

3.Hence:
(x-4)*(x-10) ---->> * means multiply.....

4.Find x value
x-4=0
Hence x=4

Also,
x-10=0
hence x=10

5.In the equation put x as 10 or 4 & u will get answer as 0.

Like, x^2-14x+40=0

Taking x=4

(4)^2 - 14*4 +40 = 0

Hence,

16 - 56 + 40 = 0

Hence 0=0.

Now,Taking x=10

(10)^2 - 14*10 +40 = 0

Hence,

100 - 140 + 40 = 0

Hence 0=0.

Therefore x=4 & x=10

You need two numbers that multiply to +40 and add to -14
These are -10 and -4

So: (x-10) (x-4) = 0

x = 10,4
