It can be seen without a telescope and has been known for thousands of years, just like all the planets out as far as Saturn. No single person discovered any of these planets.

Mercury was discovered by Johann Hieronymus Schroeter and he lived from 1745 to 1816

Mercury was named by the Romans after the fleet-footed messenger of the gods because it seemed to move more quickly than any other planet.
