I've got this gunk on my iron's soleplate, and it sometimes sticks on to clothes. I noticed it is common to happen with every iron.

When I have had this problem in the past I put vinegar in the spot that you usually put the water, put the iron on the hottest setting and use an old pillow case/sheet/rag, etc. and iron it. Using the steam setting w/ the vinegar, the vinegar is run thru the iron and cleans it out completly. I usually do one full cycle with the vinegar and the iron is clean. And with vinegar being as cheap as it is, it's a cheap fix!

Get an old Terrycloth towel and a bottle of Club soda. Sprinkle the towel with the soda and put the iron on the highest setting. Iron the wet towel and the gunk will come off.

take a few pieces of newspaper and pour some salt on it (enough to "iron"). Use a dry setting, not steam and "iron" the salt. The gunk should come off. HTH

Iron cleaner is available to purchase. Look in the sewing/crafts department or look at a fabric store and follow the package directions.

Honestly, if it were me, I would take it to the Salvation Army and donate it, then go buy one with a Teflon, non-stick plate. They're about $15.
