I've been on a few campuses where you could stand at your dorm room window and look out at a cemetery across the road or somewhere else nearby. What is the reason for this, other than for students to have a place to crash when they get drunk on the weekends (seen that happen a few times)?

Usually both the college and the cemetary were built outside the original town limits, or the college was built at the edge of the town limits, and the cemetary outside the town limits.
This later is the case at Syracuse University, by the way.

Most early zoning laws in the US were based on Roman laws, and that means that no people are to be buried in the town. Most towns only have cemetaries within them that were originally outside of them.

Its the cemeteries that are built near the campuses. Its the famous people at the college. Nine times out of ten if you read the tombstones you'll notice its the same guy that has his name on the front of the dorm as well. It's a way of honoring the people that contributed the most (usually financially) to the founding of that college.

Because everyone is just dying to get into a good school!...uh, not really. I would guess that once upon a time a lot of schools were closely associated with various churches. Most churches have a cemetery. Another reason could be that a lot of folks might actually want to be buried next to their old Alma Mater. I can't imagine wanting to be buried at my old school, but I suppose a lot of folks create a very close bond with their institutes of higher learning.

its a simple answer. most of the campuses nead a huge area to build all their stuff, so they need a land which is a bit less in cost compared to market so they choose near cemeteries. do you know some colleges are even built on them by removing them to some extend.
