Funnily enough you've gone for two cars at the opposite end of the spectrum. I used to have a V5 bora, and whilst it was quick, it was more of a fast tourer than hot hatch. To be honest, it didn't feel like 170bhp, but then it is a fairly lardy car.

The clio 172 is a thrash wagon, it's 172bhp makes it blisteringly fast becuase its so light. If you look at the performance figures for the Clio V6 supersport you'll see there's very little between the two. You'll also see that a Clio 172 trounces a V5 by a mile.

It depends what you want in a car. The clio must have a full on service history, as it's probably had a hard life. The golf V5 tends to be ignored in favour of the trendier GTi and V6 4motion models. It's a great Q car though, and you can just drive around very lazily in fifth gear whatever the speed.

Ultimatly, if you want a quick, quiet, reliable car go for the golf, but be prepared for rather spongy handling and less than hot hatch dynamics.
The renault is the anti-golf! It's light, frantic, blisteringly fast and it's 2 litre four pot revs like hell and sounds great. But if you do motorway driving it's short stacked gears make long trips annoying. 70mph equates to 4000rpm in fifth, which makes for noisy progress.

Both have lovely interiors, the golf being more sedate and solid, the renault being very much the racer with its enormous recaro's and chunky steering wheel.

They have completely different characters.
Asking which one is better is like asking is chocolate better than corn flakes.

The Golf V5 is a refined cruiser.
It is at home on the motorway or A-roads, driven in a relaxed style.
The Clio 172 is a fast-reacting, nimble hot-hatch, which is at its best being driven in a concentrated manner on B-roads and twistier A-roads.
You need to decide what you want/need from your car, and choose the most suitable.

My son has had a172 and a172 Cup and now a 182 Cup. Never had a bit of bother with any of them. A 172 will leave a V5 in its wake.

Out of the two go for the Golf by far and away! But I got a newer shape MG ZS 2.5 V6 tuned to 250bhp only cost £11000 all in. it looks better and would/does eat both Clio and Golf. not bragging, just think it would be a better option for you the MG is 180bhp just standard and its a bit different, evetyone has Cleo/Golf!

The Germans make the best cars..i think..VW is best..not a french model..had a citroen saxo VTS..when I was younger..it was quick..but a little tin-ny ..but would of loved a Golf! solid built, good materials The Germans make the Porsche 911 faster everytime...Go for a Golf, beautiful and hold their money quite well...good luck and enjoy!!!

It seems to me that you want something with a bit of a poke. If so... forget about these two little darlings and go for an adrenalin inducing Hayabusa. You could see both the golf and Renault disappearing in your rear view mirror.

Opt for the VW every time!
Better build quality, FAR superior customer service and better availability of spares for the future.

Renault are reknown for their poor customer service, poor build and unreliability.

The golf also a looks a lot more sporty in my humble opinion :)

The Golf is far better in build quality and reliability.

I hope you can afford to insure it!
