Before even considering that, make sure you have a website that you think people will pay to use. There is so much of everything available for free these days that I can't remember the last time I heard of someone actually paying to use a website - it's a very 1990s concept...

The best idea would be to take a short course of some sort to learn all that you will need to know about the various technologies involved. It's not as simple as adding a couple of lines of HTML! Also, if you take money from people you will have to pay tax on that, and you will need to pay a bank or other financier to handle card transactions etc. Generally speaking you can get free webspace - but if you intend to make money from it then your provider will most likely also charge you a fee.

The point I'm making is that it's _incredibly_ difficult to make money in that way unless you have many thousands of regularly paying users. You'd honestly make more money if you went out busking in a subway somewhere.

I am presuming that your site will be Europe based.

If you do have a great idea that loads of people will want to pay for then the easiest way to start small is to use a total solution like PayPal or Worldpay. These companies are set up to do it all for you but are pricey in comparison. If the idea really takes off then look at using a separate gateway service (eg BT Buynet) who move your requests for funds between banks and merchant acquirer (eg Streamline) who will deal with the banks that hold your customer's accounts.

They will want to have a contract with you for a minimum period of time so you need to be sure you will generate enough business to make it worthwhile.

Hope your idea takes off!

The only 'subscription' sites that are actually making any money are Porn sites :-)

This is a very competitive industry and (to be honest) you need to be based somewhere like Holland where the long arm of the British Obscenity Laws do not reach.

Good luck !
