Are US governmental agencies trying to monopolize chain link fence, by giving it a bad reputation as "Gulag"?

A few years back we put up a six foot dark green chain link fence (wooden posts) around most of our property because it is strong enough to keep out the deer and it is virtually invisible. We had to get a variance to do it, because some people were complaining it looked "too much like a Gulag." Actually that was not true, as my husband is originally from Russian and knows exactly what a Gulag looks like. Still, we got our variance because we threatened to put up something that would end up looking even uglier in a few years - like stockade fencing.
Now this morning I see a picture of Gitmo on the front page of the New York Times, and the fence looks just like ours, but taller.

The government put up a good-looking fence like yours. They are maligning the government fence only because it looks like your fence. This is more evidence of the political partisanship of your opponents. They will stop at nothing to force you to remove the fence so they can overrun your property.

Chain link is never attractive for a residential area. Tear it down and put up a wood one to make your neighboors happy.
